What is Areola Micropigmentation
Areola micropigmentation is not conventional tattooing. It is a minimally invasive, medical-grade procedure that uses specialized needles to implant pigment with clinical precision — restoring the natural appearance of the areola and nipple complex after mastectomy.
- Uses a medical-grade needle — not a tattoo machine. Pigment depth and technique are clinically controlled.
- Specifically developed for post-mastectomy and post-radiation skin — with protocols adapted to oncological healing.
- Restores areola color, shape, and symmetry permanently — bilateral or unilateral, flat reconstruction or with nipple projection.
- Performed exclusively by Roberta Peixoto — 500+ oncological cases, 15+ years of specialized practice, international recognition.
- No surgery required. No hospital stay. Minimal recovery time.

FAQs
Everything You Need to Know Before Booking
This section is here to remove any doubt before you take the next step. If you still have questions, don´t hesitate to contact us.
Is areola micropigmentation the same as a tattoo?
No. Areola micropigmentation uses a medical-grade needle with specialized pigments developed for post-mastectomy skin. The technique, depth, and protocol are entirely different from conventional tattooing. It is a minimally invasive clinical procedure.
Can this be done if I don't have a nipple?
Yes. Micropigmentation can be performed on flat reconstruction and still produces a natural, 3D result through shading and precision pigment placement.
Can I have this done if I've had radiation?
Yes — many of Roberta's cases involve post-radiation skin. Radiated skin requires special assessment and technique. Your consultation will evaluate the state of your skin and confirm whether the timing is right for your specific case.
Do I need to do anything before booking?
Yes — a few simple things. You should be at least 12 months post-surgery, fully healed at the procedure site, and have confirmed with your physician that you are ready. Your consultation with Roberta will verify everything before any commitment is made.
Is the procedure painful?
Topical anesthesia is applied before the procedure. Most post-mastectomy patients have reduced sensation at the site, which can further minimize discomfort. Comfort levels are discussed in detail during your consultation.
What is the healing process like?
Total healing takes around 6 weeks. The first 7 days are the most sensitive — this is completely normal and expected. A touch-up session is included between 6 to 8 weeks, once the skin has fully settled and the final color is established. Aftercare instructions will be provided to clients for best results.
How long do the results last?
Results are permanent. A maintenance session every 2–3 years is recommended to refresh pigment intensity as skin naturally evolves. This is optional.
How long does the procedure take?
Approximately 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on complexity, bilateral or unilateral, and the level of detail required for color matching and symmetry.
Does insurance cover areola micropigmentation?
It may — and it's worth checking before you book. Under the Women's Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA), U.S. insurance plans that covered your mastectomy are required to also cover prostheses and reconstruction as part of post-mastectomy care. Areola micropigmentation may qualify under this coverage.
Coverage is not universal and eligibility varies by plan, insurer, and individual case. When approved, reimbursement may be partial and may not cover the full investment. The relevant billing codes for areola micropigmentation are CPT 11920, CPT 11921, and CPT 11922 — your insurer will need these to process a claim.
To support your reimbursement request, RmonyCare provides a ready-to-use letter of medical necessity for your physician's signature, along with a detailed receipt with the applicable billing codes. Your physician signs the letter, you submit both documents to your insurer, and they process the claim. Contact your insurance provider directly to confirm whether your plan covers this procedure and what additional documentation they may require before booking.
Do you see patients from out of state or internationally?
Yes. RmonyCare serves patients across the US and internationally. Online consultations available in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. Travel logistics can be discussed during your consultation.
